On Wednesday the 10th of January 2018, a number of students on the Disaster Management and Sustainable Development MSc course at Northumbria University and members of the NSU Northumbria Disaster and Development Society (DDS) were invited to Leicester University to attend a one-day international research and leadership development workshop on Risk, Crisis, Disaster and Development Management Education, organised by the University of Leicester and Kansai University. The title of the project was ‘Risk, Crisis, Disaster and Development Management: Future Leader Programme’, funded by Kansai University’s ‘Improvement in Research & Education Fund’. The Universities of Leicester, Sheffield and Kansai (Japan) aim to develop a Future Leaders programme for disaster risk management. The workshop was attended by key stakeholders, such as students, graduates, course/module leaders and practitioners.
The workshop provided an opportunity for researchers to share the preliminary findings of the research project, and for stakeholders to voice their opinions during the process of identifying the needs of and developing future courses/programmes related to disaster risk management.

Attending the workshop provided a great opportunity for us to voice our thoughts and opinions on the type of programmes that we felt would be useful, such as greater focus on work experience opportunities and employability, and more intensive, short-term practical courses, and to gain a greater insight into the future of disaster risk management education. It was enlightening to draw links between the themes discussed and our own society’s work, as well as our MSc studies.

The workshop also provided us with the opportunity to voice our own thoughts and opinions.
The DDS would like to thank Denise Corsel, Dr Nibedita Ray-Bennett (both Leicester University), Dr Hideyuki Shiroshita (Kansai University) and the research team for inviting us to this event which was very interesting and informative. We would also like to thank Richard Kotter (our Programme Leader at Northumbria University), for making us aware of the opportunity and helping to organise the trip. We found the day to be very enjoyable, and worthwhile. We would also like to thank them, and the DDS, for their support in terms of travel and accommodation expenses. We hope our contributions to the project have been useful.
